In the first example of university programs being integrated within an Australian elite sporting precinct, the Rugby Australia Building in Moore Park will also lead in sustainability. The newly constructed building features a 64kW commercial solar system.
According to UTS, the building, which opened in October 2017, accommodates sport and exercise science and management programs from the university’s Faculty of Health, as well as the Graduate School of Health’s physiotherapy program. It is also the headquarters of Rugby Australia and home to Australia’s elite national rugby teams, including the Wallabies and the Olympic gold medal-winning women’s sevens rugby team.
Sports, due to their ability to reach enormous numbers of fans worldwide, have long been a platform for promoting social initiatives like solar power. There is a global trend of both regional and elite sports stadiums switching to solar power for the substantial savings solar can offer as well as the public support of green initiatives. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has even mandated environmental protection measures (Green Programs —“the third pillar of Olympics games”) as one of the requirements for a successful bid to host the Games. This, along with falling costs for installation, and rising energy prices have made solar particularly attractive to sports venues with often ample roof space.
Todae Solar was selected to install the system at Rugby Australia after a successful partnership with UTS for a 101kW system which was widely praised by the university and Ausgrid officials. The solar system is now switched on and expected to generate about 89,000kWh of electricity which covers about 12% of the facility’s overall electricity bill. The Rugby Australia Building is poised to lead the Australian sports industry in sustainability with a 20-year carbon abatement of about 1,500 tonnes.
Todae Solar commends UTS for its continued leadership in sustainability and congratulates the university and Rugby Australia on this new project. Todae Solar is one of the most experienced commercial solar installers in Australia.
